Mustard seed plant officially opens

Young has a new mustard processing plant which starts commercial processing on Monday. It’s the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and was officially opened on Thursday, November 26 by Young’s Mayor, Brian Ingram.

The Australian Mustard Oil Pty Ltd (AMO) facility located on Telegraph Road, employs 10 staff on two shifts and raw material is sourced locally and from Victoria and South Australia.

The primary product for most similar operations is the oil from the seed but for the Young operation, even though the oil is important it is a bi-product, with the volatile oil or essence extracted from the seed being the real prize.

This product contains glucosinolates and when extracted from the meal it is used in wasabi. At this stage all product from the plant is destined for export to Japan.

Over time there are expansion plans for the Young operations and it is anticipated that more farmers will turn their attention to growing mustard as another important tool in crop rotation and profitability, mustard currently commands a higher price than canola.
